Mortis took me to Feary, delivering me to Imperial University in a matter of minutes. His method of instant travel was one I'd certainly miss once I was done with the job.
Thanks to the cloak, not even pixies seemed to see me. They could usually look through any kind of glamour, meaning the cloak was using some very powerful magic, indeed.
I entered the history building and walked down a winding hall. A familiar voice emanated from ahead, leading me to the room where Raghat the orc was teaching a class. I took a seat in the back and took out the Death manual while I waited for him to finish. It was time to fully educate myself on my duties and abilities, not to mention discover answers to a few troubling questions.
For example, if the wards around Sanctuary and Alistair's mansion prevented Mortis from fast traveling inside of them, was there a way to prevent Death from reaching a body? Could someone like Alistair physically block me from reaching bodies and create a massive zombie uprising?
I found the answer in the first section. The Death cloak, it seemed, allowed Death to draw nearby souls to him if the corpse couldn't otherwise be reached. I studied the section, thinking it might offer a solution to reaping souls from zombie mobs without ever having to get close to them.
I'd just reached the halfway point of the manual when the class broke into applause as Raghat finished acting out his latest history lesson. The orc had a flair for the dramatic and he could tell a story like no one else. He was far different from any orc I'd met, which was probably why he was the only orc allowed at the university.
I waited for the crowd to thin out and headed down the aisle of the stadium-seating room where he stood at the podium. A pair of female elves had cornered him and were making eyes at him.
"We'd love some private lessons, professor," one said. "You're amazing!"
No one noticed me still shrouded in the cloak.
Raghat cleared his throat. "You're both simply too kind, but I will be busy writing, I'm afraid."
"You don't need any fun time?" The second elf winked at him. "You're a legend, having survived the Dead Forest and driven off a scourge!"
He bared his tusks in a grin. "That's quite a compliment, but I was merely there to record history. Had not the Oblivion Guard swooped in and saved the day, all of Feary might have been doomed."
"That can't be the total truth." The first elf pursed her lips. "Perhaps you can tell us what really happened while we share the comfort of your bed."
"That would be inappropriate, I'm afraid." He packed his books into a satchel. "Now, if you'll excuse me, I must go."
The elves looked at each other and nodded, as if mentally communicating something, then drew swords.
"You will tell us what happened, or things will get unpleasant." The first bared her teeth. "We know the fae are covering up something and the people deserve to know the truth.
